Endearing decor of antiques. Beautiful view of the Santa Croce church.
This grand noble apartment on the Piazza Santa Croce has plenty space and views for the whole family. Come settle in for a long, comfortable stay, entertain and really discover Florence! There is room to entertain and to settle in for a long stay in beautiful Florence.
Conveniently located in the heart of the historical center of Florence, in Piazza Santa Croce, the palazzo is a landmark Renaissance Palazzo, and one of the few left in the historic center of Florence with a dramatic frescoed facade.
Piazza Santa Croce is a traffic free square but the people going through the square in the evenings may be noisy. Piazza Santa Croce is the site of occasional events. Watching the Calcio Storico in June (soccer in costumes, see photos) from the Palazzo is an exciting privilege. The Christmas Market is fun, too. Other events can include theater, music concerts and ceremonies that you may enjoy or find noisy or both! Most of these events appear on the calendar fairly late, but you can check on this site www.firenzetoday.it/eventi/. Ask us for help. This apartment's master bedroom faces the piazza but the sleeping area is insulated by a floor to ceiling clear plexiglass wall that separates it from a small sitting room that overlooks the piazza.
During late May thru late June there is noise in the piazza related to the Calico Storico, historic soccer matches. Late May is bleacher set up, June is practices and matches. If you can catch any of the play-offs (dates not advised in advance) or the final on June 24th, you’ll get a rare treat and the “best seat in the house”. For more information look up Calcio Storico on YouTube.
Many people passing through Piazza Santa Croce notice Giovanni di Ser Giovanni`s 1620 frescoes on the overhanging facade this handsome building, but few realize they can actually stay here. The 16th-century palazzo is owned by the gracious Contessa Piccolomini, who rents out truly spacious apartments to anyone who has ever dreamed of lying in bed near a roaring fire under a 17th-century frescoed ceiling or sipping tea in a living room surrounded by trompe d`oeil Roman ruins with a 16th-century wood ceiling above.
The roomy and recently updated Giotto apartment is on the third floor (American designation) of the Palazzo. There are six steps down from the elevator landing.
The large living room and dining room are separated visually by a working stone fireplace. The living room has ample seating. Original frescoes are preserved on the living room wall reminding you of the history of this building within the glorious history of Florence. The living room area overlooks the piazza. The living room and master bedroom both have the original wood beam ceilings from the 1500s, the time of the Renaissance.
The dining table will seat up to twelve. Across the foyer is the kitchen with lime green cabinets giving it a mid-20th century feel. But the appliances are all up to date. A narrow table adds preparation space or a spot for a casual breakfast or children`s meal.
The master suite with a working fireplace has a queen size bed that can be divided into two single beds. The bedroom adjoins a study/wardrobe followed by a bath with shower over tub. his apartment's master bedroom faces the piazza but the sleeping area is insulated by a floor to ceiling clear plexiglass wall that separates it from a small sitting room that overlooks the piazza.
Two more bedrooms complete this roomy apartment. They both face the quiet, private inner courtyard. One has two single beds and en-suite bathroom with shower. The third bedroom has a queen that can be divided into two singles and an adjoining bathroom with shower.
Facilities: Air conditioning, independently controlled heating, dishwasher, Washer, dryer, oven, microwave oven, toaster, American coffee maker, satellite TV, stereo hi-fi, CD and DVD players, high speed wireless and standard internet connection, hair dryer, iron + ironing board. Use of small Palazzo private mini-gym.

- Lovely apartments. Very comfortable and well appointed.
- We loved observing the daily life of the piazza starting with street cleaners, dog walkers, children going to school, the first tourists all the way till the after dinner strollers.
- There are always things going on in the piazza including art installations, athletic events, music events, the big Calcio Storico during June and the Christmas market that may involve the erecting of temporary structures. You can't really expect quiet in rooms with windows directly on the piazza. Some events that involve bleachers can block lower windows.
- One of the lowest spots in the city, note the high water marks on the buildings in the neighborhood -- on the second floor.
- The Santa Croce church with the tombs of Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli and more is worth a day.
- Additional fees for utilities that are charged according to use.
Our Guest Reviews
Great stay at Santa Croce
My wife, 2 kids, and I spent 5 nights in this beautiful, historic, but updated villa overlooking the piazza of Santa Croce church. The large 3 BR/3BA apartment was just updated, and we were the first guests since the renovation was completed. The apartment has modern, sleek and expensive appliances including a washer AND dryer!! The location is breathtaking as you can look out your windows directly onto the piazza of Santa Croce, and look at the beautiful church as well. Despite being right next to the piazza, we didn't hear any noise from the outside because of the sound-proof windows. Any small inconveniences we may have experienced were quickly rectified once we brought it to on site team's attention (Wi-Fi and how to use appliances). This is the 4th time we have utilized Italy Perfect for trips to Italy during the past 9 years, and we have never been let down. Pat is always very patient with my many questions and requests, and I consider her to be a friend as well as an excellent source of information.
If you are interested in high end leather, the School of Leather located on the back side of the Santa Croce Basilica is a must see. We rented a car and went to Arezzo, 50 minutes south, and also went to Maranello (Ferrari Museum) and Modena (about 90 minutes north). If you are interested in Balsamic vinegar and would like to experience the oldest producer in the area, check out Acetaia Cavedoni: http://www.acetaiacavedoni.it/
This family business has been around since 1860 and our 90 minute private tour with Marcello was amazing, complete with bread, cheese, salumeria, dessert, lambrusco, expresso and plenty of balsamic vinegar.
Our taxi ride to Fiesole, 15 minutes from the apartment atop a large hill, provided one of the most breathtaking views I have seen in my 4 trips to Italy. Eating at La Reggia degli Etruschi, in Fiesole, was phenomenal!!
On a final note, the building is very secure, has great air conditioning in every room, is large, clean and we did not see a single bug or spider in the apartment the whole time. Many thanks to all for making our trip to Florence special!
Vacation of a life time
Our stay at the Giotto apartment was perfect, to say the least. The idea of staying in a place that was built before America was ever discovered was a great experience.
The Calcio Storico game was a great experience. Besides the game, the events preceding the game provided us with a great historical lesson.
The service of Italy Perfect was perfect. We would have never experienced a vacation of a life time without Italy Perfect. Italy Perfect made our vacation complete.
[Thank you so much, Paul, we were so excited to help you organize your trip and to get you to Florence in an apartment with a view of the game. You can't even get tickets to it...the locals get them all, so you had the best seat in the house! Come again! The Italy Perfect Team]
S Croce Giotto
This apartment had everything we needed to enjoy a wonderful week in Florence! The bed was comfortable, the location was fantastic, and the apartment had all the amenities we needed. The washer and dryer were welcomed after a week on the road to refresh our laundry for another week of traveling. There is a great little restaurant on the first floor (Bocodama's) which works well when you arrive and don't have the energy to explore (the fettucine with wild boar sauce was very good). We could walk to just about everything from the apartment, exploring interesting sites along the way. Violi's, a super gelato store, is only a couple of short blocks away. There is a taxi stand about 100 feet away for the excursions beyond walking distance or a trip to the train station or airport. Above all, do not miss the coffee shop diagonally across the plaza which has the best croissants (many flavors) for only one euro each. I would recommend this apartment and the highly accommodating service of Italy Perfect to everyone!
[Thank you Rich, we are delighted you enjoyed your stay! The Italy Perfect Team]
A Week in Florence
The accommodations were good and in a great location. Easy walking to many places of interest.
We were fortunate in that the weekend we were there, there was a concert in the square in front of Santa Croce featuring the world renown tenor Placido Domingo. We got to watch and listen from our apartment balcony. Probably at least ten thousand ticket buyers as we took it all in for free.
My family of six stayed in this apartment for four nights and it was amazing! The apartment was very clean and very comfortable. The location was perfect. We were close to many of the sights. There are many restaurants on the street to choose from. It was lovely to open the windows and hear a singer or an accordion player. The staff couldn't be more helpful. Stay here - you won't be sorry!!
[Thank you so much, Shawn]
A Short Walk to Everything
We spent six days/nights in a wonderful three bedroom/three bath apartment on the third floor of a 200 year old building overlooking the plaza of Sante Croce: the location is perfect. A ten minute walk to the Duomo and all its surrounds; fifteen minutes to the Ponte Vecchia Bridge; a ten minute walk to drug store (pharmacia) and market; a one minute walk to the Santa Croce Church; a wonderful restaurant literally outside our door; and right in the heart of the leather district. The apartment itself is more than adequate: quite comfortable. Great to be able to eat in, especially breakfast, at our pace. And plenty of room for a family of five (even when the kids are grown ups) with all having their privacy when they want it.
[Thank you so much for your review! Can you believe that the building is actually more than 500 years old? The Italy Perfect Team]
We rented Giotto and Medici for our family of 13 over Christmas. With 9 adults and 4 children we couldn't have been happier! Both apartments were beautiful, and overlooking the wonderful Piazza Santa Croce!
The apartment was so perfectly and centrally located to museums, grocery stores, restaurants, and shopping. Everything was within easy walking distance.
[Thank you so much Deborah. We are delighted you and your family had such a lovely holiday. The Italy Perfect Team]
We had a wonderful stay in Florence. This apartment is very spacious and comfortable. The location was great. Our greeter was very helpful. Would highly recommend this apartment for families. The restaurant right next door was very good and very friendly. Thanks Italy Perfect for the wonderful stay. Would definitely recommend them to friends.
[Thank you so much! The Italy Perfect Team]
The location couldn't be better. Plenty of room for all five of us. Plus everyone had there own bath plus air conditioner in all rooms. Host were very accommodating and answered all questions. Only one flaw kitchen needed a few more items (soap for dishes and surfaces). Our six days couldn't have been better.
[We are delighted your stay was so nice. The Italy Perfect team]
Our apartment was very comfortable, quiet, clean, and well equipped.
Our apartment was very comfortable, quiet, clean, and well equipped. It was located in a historic palazzo turned into apartments on the Piazza Santa Croce. Our interests were in history, art, and architecture so the location was perfect. We were able to walk everywhere and even manage one of our party in a wheelchair. There is a "super" market a few blocks away for anything from staples to fine wine. We ate well everyday in a restaurant near our morning excursions, so all over the historic area. Food was great everywhere. Our travel companions are world-class consumers of gelato and give world-class honors to the small gelateria around the corner, facing the convent associated with Santa Croce. The folks at Italy Perfect were very helpful. And, yes, I would certainly seek them out again and recommend them to friends.
