South of Naples, the Massa Lubrense promontory forms the southern arm of the beautiful bay of Naples. Across the bay from Naples is the town of Sorrento. Between the two, along the bay, are the towns under the volcano Vesuvius that the ancient Romans chose for their vacation homes: Herculaneum, Pompeii, and Stabiae. Since the 1800s, Sorrento has been a vacation choice for the rich and famous, a stop on the Grand Tour. It sits on a cliff so there are few sandy beaches. Villa Sole is on the Massa Lubrense promontory. Breathtaking Mediterranean views encompass a prized perspective on the fabled Isle of Capri.
To arrive at Villa Sole, you drive from the North/South highway, past Naples and along the first part of the winding, cliff-edge Amalfi Coast Drive through and 2.5 miles (4k) past Sorrento. It is 13 miles to Positano and 37 miles to Naples.
A curving road leads down from the Amalfi Coast road past a number of villas. Villa Sole is at the end of the road, as close to the sea as one can get here.
It is 80 steps down to the water where there is a sun bathing platform, toilet, shower and a ladder down into the clear, blue-green water.
Grounds man puts out lounge chairs and umbrella.
There are some sea walls to calm the waters close to shore and a jetty where you can bring in a boat. You may hire a boat to take you out on the water and to the islands of Capri and Ischia and it can pick you up here.
Villa Mare has a large terrace overlooking the sea. Maintenance is meticulous and each weekday a housekeeper tends to the grounds, sets out lounge chairs at the beach and provides an hour an a half of housekeeping.
Villa Mare is one level above the street level where you may park one car.
Above and set back from Villa Mare is Sole, a six bedroom. villa And, halfway down to the water, is a one bedroom apartment that backs into the cliff, called Stella. Altogether, with use of sofa beds and a rollaway, the complex could sleep 22.
You can enter onto the terrace next to the villa entrance and immediately being to enjoy the spectacular view of the Mediterranean sea and sky. On the left is a platform with the large outside dining table that seats eight. The terrace has areas that are open to the sun and others that have rush sun shades.
To the left is a pool of 15 x 32 feet, 4.5 x 10m. It is a pool with a vinyl liner. The sides are concealed by steps and a wall.
The living room furniture, all in white, faces the television and, across the room a fireplace for cozy winter enjoyment. There is a sofa and four arm chairs. The dining area is open to the living room. Cool white walls and chair covers offset pretty turquoise tile and mosaic floors.
The living room and the master bedroom are air-conditioned. The television has satellite reception so as to receive some BBC channels. There is a VCR, a CD stereo and a landline telephone.
The kitchen continues with the same turquoise tiles as in the dining room. It has everything a cook needs with large (for Italy) refrigerator/freezer, microwave, four burner stove top and dishwasher.
There are three bedrooms. The master bedroom has some very nice antique furniture pieces, a queen-sized bed and ensuite bath with shower. It has a sea view. The second and third bedrooms share a bath with shower. One bedroom has a queen sized bed and the other two twin beds.
Included in the price is daily housekeeping for care of the villa. One set of linens is included in the price. Additional linen changes available for a fee.

Our Guest Reviews
A week in heaven
We've just returned from a week at Villa Mare and it was heaven. Plenty of room to relax, and a terrific location, perfectly situated between Sorrento and Positano. We rented a car in Sorrento and drove ourselves around locally (we would suggest hiring a driver for Positano or Amalfi. And make sure not to rent a giant passenger van, as it will be too unwieldy for an inexperienced driver on those narrow, winding roads). We toured Amalfi, Positano, and Ravello, did a day trip to Pompeii and Herculaneum (leave early in the morning to avoid gnarly traffic), and took a day trip to Capri. We also spent a day scuba diving with Punta Campanella diving- they're located right in the marina at Marina Lobrano and it was an easy walk. But our favorite days were those we spent down by the beach, walking to Marina Lobrano for dinner (have the gnocci at San Michele) and breakfast (Angelo's is great), and relaxing on the beautiful terrace. Massa Lubrense is a beautiful town and we so enjoyed walking around the square, even going to the grocery store was interesting and fun.
The villa was perfect for our family of 6, had everything we needed and more, and we were lulled to sleep each night by the sound of waves right below us. We could not have asked for a better location, or more beautiful sunsets.

Villa Mare was like a dream. You don’t know how you get there or how you survive during the experience, but it is beyond beautiful and you don’t want it to end. The beauty of the coast, Capri on my left and the sunset directly in front is something I only thought happened in movies. Drinking this in each day, I was intoxicated the entire week. The pool, lemon grove and the full-bloom bougainvillea were icing on the cake. Our hosts, Luciana and Tina, were attentive and helpful, with good advice for restaurants and taxis. The abnormal heat during this week caused a local black out that resulted in no hot water for us, and this was fixed quickly after we reported it. Air conditioning was essential during this unusually hot week and it worked well. Like-wise the clothes washer, although it took us a while to get it working properly.
Access to this marvelous place is very difficult. We never would have found it on our own, but the driver knew his way. However, every coastal town in the area seemed to have the same tiny, twisted, hilly streets. Basically, we had 2 options. Walk to or get delivery from the fishing village, or call a cab. Delivery from da Michele and dining at Funiculi Funicula and Angelos was very pleasant as it had the same extraordinary view as Villa Mare. The food was fresh and delicious.
Finding shuttles and taxis for the 6 of us was a constant challenge, but the wonderful people of the Massa Lubrense fishing village tried to accommodate us at every opportunity. Getting to Sorrento was another story, and getting back even more challenging, but the driver from the fishing village, David, usually came through. He either picked us up or sent someone for us. For longer excursions, Giovanni drove us to Naples and Ravello. As it turned out, our drivers were a favorite part of our vacation.
Although the property was delightful, there were many improvements we thought of while we were there. Certainly, screens would help in the living room and especially in the 2 bedrooms. Mosquitos, heat and humidity made air conditioning necessary, to tolerate the closed windows. A breeze at night made it very nice to sleep with the windows open in the Master bedroom where there were screens.
And a few grand ideas - to screen in the porch off the kitchen would make it a great gathering place and give the tiny kitchen area a roomier feel. Also, we played cards quite often in the evening at the dining table inside and a second ceiling fan closer to it would have been very welcome.
The stairs to the water’s edge are quaint and medieval, and exhausting! Once down there, the water entry was slippery and very rough. I was the only one in my group brave enough to try, as I would be embarrassed to go home after staying so close without at least trying to swim in the Mediterranean. But I agree, my friends made the right choice not to try as it was dangerous. It is the coolest thing, like a pirate adventure, but it would be nice to be able to get into the beautiful water of the Mediterranean without risking injury. Maybe some sort of gang-plank (with slip proof covering) out to the deeper water.
Although I have many suggestions, my stay at Villa Mare met and exceeded my expectations for incredible Mediterranean beauty and I would not change that! My heart still beats a bit faster when I look at the photos of the sunset on the deck and the beautiful Bougainvillea. And my heart warms when I remember the wonderful people who helped make our stay exceptional.

Una vacanza meravigliosa!
This was our third time staying at this property. We stayed at Villa Mare twice and Villa Sole(upstairs property) once. Our hosts were lovely and very helpful. The house was clean, spacious, and beautifully decorated. The sunsets from our large patio were spectacular! The views of Capri and Ischia were breathtaking. We enjoyed our walks on the beach and to the nearby restaurants at the quaint Marina della Lobra. The food was delicious and the service excellent. We found this to be a very relaxing and enjoyable stay. It was easy enough to drive from here to Sorrento or other towns along the Amalfi coast. Massa Lubrense was a welcome respite from the busy tourist filled areas of other Italian cities. Being able to book the reservation and make payments in American dollars with a reputable person like Pat Byrne was one of the reasons we keep using Italy Perfect!

We had a marvelous time staying at Villa Mare. Lisa from Italy Perfect was so helpful and informative. Enjoyed a day trip to Capri. Would love to come back and stay again at Villa Mare.
Just about perfect
The photos are accurate -- the view is gorgeous, with Capri always visible. The unit is about 60 feet above the water. The kitchen, while small, is usable. The deck is huge, with a table seating 8 where we ate most of our breakfasts and some lunches. It was very quiet at night. My only criticism is that the shower in the master bedroom was quite uncomfortable, with no water pressure and less room. The shared bathroom had a better one. The location is quite good -- it's a 5 minute drive from "downtown" Massa Lubrense, which is a nice small town with food shops. Sorrento is a 20-30 minute drive. There are many good restaurants in the area, with two decent ones a 1km walk along the water in Marina della Lobra. The owners, Luciana and Gino, were very responsive and helpful. Italy Perfect was a pleasure to deal with. I wouldn't recommend this for those with bum knees or hips due to the steep, narrow stairs
The Villa Mare at San Montano is an amazingly beautiful and tranquil villa situated just outside Sorrento with quaint winding roads leading down to the sea. Waking up every morning to beautiful views of the Med and the Isle of Capri, and ending every evening with splendid sunsets was truly magical. Our hostess, Luciana, and her support staff were friendly and helpful.
Peace and Tranquility at Villa Mare
Villa Mare was the perfect place for my family of 6. I was so happy we stayed in peaceful MassaLubrense instead of busy Sorrento. It was still close enough to Sorrento if we wanted to visit. The service was fantastic. The owners were very helpful. They were warm people who made us feel very much at home.I did not ever want to leave!!! The home itself was beautiful with wonderful views of the sea. There was a quaint harbor nearby with some very delightful restaurants. The kids loved the pool and the beach. Everything we needed was here. It was the perfect italian villa.
The Villa was everything you said it would be and more
The Villa was everything you said it would be and more, Pat. We kept very busy sightseeing but every day we swam in the warm sea. The hostess was so welcoming. Jim managed to find his ancestor's hometown, a long but fulfilling day trip. We even learned how to make lemoncello.
