A luxury apartment with two terraces, all amenities including weekday housekeeping in one of the most fascinating neighborhoods in the heart of Rome.

Location

The Fontana apartment is located on a small piazza where one of Rome's most charming little fountains can be found. The piazza is like a delightful discovery, set off from the bustling streets of Rome. It is located what was once known as the Jewish Ghetto of Rome. Today this neighborhood is well known for the many wonderful restaurants. The Fontana apartment is in an excellent historic center location, only a few blocks from the popular Campo' de Fiori and Piazza Navona. Campo de' Fiori is Rome's most famous open air market for fresh produce and flowers.

Exterior

The building is a Roman "palazzo" that has been home to an Italian noble family for many centuries and is very well maintained. The apartment is located on the 6th floor, U.S. designation, and has an elevator.

Interior

A very special feature of this apartment is the small terrace off the dining area, where guests can enjoy meals al fresco. It's a delightful spot, nicely furnished with wrought iron patio table and chairs. Connected to this terrace by a spiral staircase is a second, upper unfurnished terrace, where you can take in beautiful views of Rome. Off in the distance you can even see the dome of St. Peter's basilica.

From the nice-sized entry way, you enter the comfortable living room that is tastefully furnished with a high quality sofa and two arm chairs, accented with some very nice antique pieces of furniture. Under a high window is an antique desk. The walls have been painted a warm yellow which makes the room very inviting.

The dining and kitchen areas are four steps down from the living room. French doors open onto the sunny terrace. The antique dining table has upholstered chairs for four. For larger groups, an matching armchair from the living room provides supplemental seating at the dining table. The kitchen is fully modernized with limestone countertops and rich red custom cabinets. It has a refrigerator with freezer compartment, 4-burner gas stove, electric oven, microwave, drip coffeemaker and dishwasher.

Each of the bedrooms has a set of French doors opening out onto a very narrow balcony that admits lots of light throughout. The master bedroom has a canopied queen bed and is furnished is warm gold tones. Just outside the master bedroom is the master bathroom, accessed off the hallway. The second bedroom has two twin beds and in addition to the French doors, it also has a window overlooking the terrace.

The master bathroom is quite roomy and has a bathtub with sprayer attachment, a sink, bidet and toilet. The second bathroom is small with a shower, sink, bidet and toilet.

Rent includes one hour of housekeeping each weekday.

The Fontana apartment was beyond expectation. Aug 2008

Thank you Excellent Europe for a most wonderful Roman vacation! Our stay at the Fontana apartment was beyond expectation.  The building where the apartment is located (which, upon research, we learned was the prior palace of the Pope's financial advisor) was not only beautiful and quiet, but a place to explore every time we came and went from our apartment.  Piazza Mattei is also beautiful; with Bernini's turtles awaiting us each morning and evening.  Our kids had a wonderful time just playing in this Piazza.  The apartment was spacious and well appointed, as well as extremely comfortable.  Our contact in Rome (Paul) was at our service whenever we needed him.  And, of course, there really is no substitute for sitting on terraces with a glass of wine surrounded by Rome's characteristic red tile roofs and domes.  In addition, the location was perfect in everyway.  Easy access to all major parts of the city...we walked to Piazza Venezia, Piazza Navona, Campo di'Fiori, the Colliseum, the Spanish steps, Trastevere, etc.  Just perfect.  We will definitely seek out Excellent Europe's services in the future and would not hesitate to return to the Fontana apartment.  With its two bedrooms and two full baths it was perfect for our family of 4! Thanks again.

We LOVED the apartment. Jul 2008

The balconies were lots of fun and the neighborhood was wonderful. As you said, it was one of the loveliest neighborhoods in Rome. One evening we were sitting at a nearby restaurant when approximately 20 Vespas drove into the piazza. It was a touring Vespa party - viewing Rome at night. They all parked the Vespas and the tour guide proceeded to explain the story about the [Turtle] fountain. It was very entertaining. The piazza is listed in my guidebook as having one of the prettiest fountains in the city. So thank you so much for all of your help.

Fontana's space was delightful. May 2008

The space worked for us and my 83 year old mother and 31 year old son had some wonderful mornings and evenings, before the friends rushed over.

The dining area, kitchen and terrace were a favorite for all 13 of us. I personally enjoyed the view from my bed of the rooftops and a cupola of a church.

I absolutely loved the food. We walked every day to Campo de' Fiori, down to the ghetto, up to the Pantheon. We lived and breathed Rome. Many of the meeting points for the walking tours with Context Travel were nearby. When I had lived there in the late 1960s, it was always on a Monte...Monte Mario or Villa Borghese or Ostia Lido....back then, there were holes in the streets and no lights at night in the historic center where we stayed...it had a kind of India feel to it...malarial. Now, it is absolutely stunningly revealed and I feel enriched by the experience.

Recommend: Acqua Madre, the hammam nearby, was used by many. The bar at Piazza Farnese had the best cornetti and fresh orange juice...well worth the walk. My mom had a jacket made by the camiceria downstairs on Via Falegnami, there were some great shops across Arenula. I recommend the Russian Tea Room highly, Mauro at the deli attached to the Forno and all the wonderful wines, cheeses, and mortadella that he shared with us. The unnamed bakery on the corner of Portico di Ottavia was another favorite as well as the gelateria on Via Arenula, perhaps two blocks up from the river. Palazzo Mattei, i visited over and over again...one of our tours even walked us through it. Stunning to have it so nearby.

Avail yourself of the wonderful markets and gastronomia and eat in on your terrace. Take a passegiata in the evening for your gelato or glass of wine at the nearby enoteca. My one regret was that i did not take in any music.

You do very well by us. I have referred others to you and plan to use you again. Another trip is being contemplated.

The apartment was beautiful and extremely well located. Mar 2008

The apartment was beautiful and extremely well located. The greeter was an absolute delight to work with. We also found that the location could not have been better both in terms of enjoying Rome, and in terms of our son's home and school.  The apartment is beautiful and very nicely appointed.

Its look and feel made us feel at home immediately. Dec 2007

Let me start by saying how useful your information was and how much I appreciated your developing those materials for your clients. Secondly, we loved the well-appointed and attractively furnished and decorated apartment. Its look and feel made us feel at home immediately.

The Fontana was in a superb location Sep 2007

The Fontana was in a superb location... about 10-30 minute walk to ALL the major attractions. Only the Vatican & Trevi Fountain are meaningful hikes. The greeter was a very gracious & helpful host. He took the time to walk us around the immediate neighbourhood; show us where to catch a taxi/bus when we arrived.

The owner was extremely gracious and helpful. Jul 2007

We had a wonderful time in Rome and thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Fontana apartment. It was very spacious, comfortable, well-equipped and in a great location. The photos don't do it justice. The palazzo sits in a charming square that was just off the beaten track and surprisingly quiet. The owner was extremely gracious and helpful. As well as explaining how everthing worked in the apartment, he gave us a walking tour of the neighborhood pointing out grocery stores, banks, taxis, etc. Everything you might need is within 5 minutes. The welcoming gift of wine and fresh fruit was most appreciated. It was very hot when we were there (35+C) so were glad to come back to an air-conditioned apartment. The rooms cooled down very quickly. Despite the heat, we still used the terraces daily - breakfast on the lower terrace, and early evening drinks on the upper terrace. I was abit concerned it would be too hot because there were no umbrellas but both areas were shaded at these times. We loved starting and ending our days on the terraces.

I was abit concerned it would be too hot because there were no umbrellas but both areas were shaded at these times. We loved starting and ending our days on the terraces.

It was also nice to have the daily housekeeping - something that isn't usually included in apartment rentals.

We thought the area/neighborhood was great and convenient to the sites. We walked almost everywhere and used the taxi/bus stand that was 5 minutes away. Being cat lovers - we enjoyed visiting the cat sanctuary that was right beside the taxis. We especially enjoyed the Pantheon area, and Piazza Navona area (each about 10 minutes away). Both were lively in the evenings with lots of restaurants and live entertainment. If you're looking for knock-off handbags, sunglasses, watches, etc. Piazza Navona had a great selection! There were also lots of Jewish restaurants near the Teatro Marcello where in the summer you can enjoy outdoor classical music concerts. We didn't actually attend a concert but could still hear some of the music at the outdoor restaurants. Also, be sure to cross the bridge and visit Trastevere - we did the Rick Steves walk through the area and really enjoyed it.

In terms of problems - nothing major. We had minor problems with slow water drainage in the shower. We also felt that a new frypan may be in order as the "non-stick" part was almost completely off. A nice addition to the terraces might be some cushions for the wrought iron chairs as well as an umbrella. [All of these issues are being addressed. Pat]

Overall, I would recommend this apartment and Excellent Europe and would gladly stay here again. Thanks for your help and personal phone calls - an unexpected but welcome touch.

Everything works out beautifully Jun 2007

We had a wonderful time in Italy. it was one of those vacations where everything works out beautifully - the weather, the location, the company! The apartment in Rome [Fontana] was perfect. The greeter met us there and showed us around the neighborhood, everything worked perfectly, the location was so convenient, and the apartment itself was delightful and the ideal size for the five of us

The terraces are terrific Jun 2007

The Fontana apartment was comfortable, extremely quiet, conveniently located and has a killer air conditioning system. The terraces are terrific and the piazza and building old-Rome charming. Loved the fortress-like gated entrance! We felt very safe, especially important to use with six-year old twin daughters in tow. The very best thing about it, however, was Perafan himself. He took the time to take us on a walking tour around the neighborhood and point out the highlights, services and restaurant recommendations and was utterly charming and accessible. His perfect English was music to our ears after being in the countryside for two weeks where no one speaks much English. Whenever we called with a question he promptly answered the phone and was forthcoming and helpful. He even left us a bottle of champagne which we gratefully enjoyed! We would definitely stay at the Fontana apartment again. We would definitely rent from ItalyPerfect again.

Excellent! We loved this apartment. May 2007

Excellent! We loved this apartment. The neighborhood was great -- very accessible to all of the sites but also tucked away and much quieter. The apartment was very nicely decorated and well-appointed -- we found the bedrooms very comfortable and the large kitchen to have everything that we needed (and we used it often to cook all the wonderful food we bought at the Campo de' Fiori!). We spent much of our time on the sunny terraces, which are absolutely fabulous. The owner was very helpful and pleasant (he took us on a tour of the neighborhood when we arrived and drove us to our next apartment when we - sadly - had to leave). The daily maid service was another very nice feature. We would certainly go back to this apartment if we stayed in Rome again and were very sad to leave it! Enjoyed most the location/neighborhood, the terraces. Fantastic. Try the "stratchiamou" (stratchiatella with nutella) flavour at the gelatto shop on the Via del Portico d'Ottavia. Have a granita from Tazza d'Oro and a cappuccino from the Caffe St. Eustachio. Shop (early) at the Campo de' Fiori and try the pizza bianco from the Forno (Campo De' Fiori, 22). I am so glad that I found your website. We enjoyed both apartments (particularly the Fontana which I would love to return to) and will certainly email you the next time we go to Rome. Thank you again for all of your help, especially for accommodating us at the last minute.
