| Friendly Apartment Hotel in Central Rome |
Janus, the Roman god of portals, welcomes you with his enduring monument that stands directly outside these inviting apartments in central Rome. A suites hotel, the Janus offers your own apartment in Rome and a friendly staff to help you best enjoy your visit.
The Janus residence is in a really special location in Rome. Wonderful ancient and medieval monuments are right outside your door, while you find yourself in a peaceful village within the walls of Rome. It is a five minute walk to Trastevere, Piazza Venezia, the Capitoline Hill, the Palantine Hill, the Theater of Marcellus, and the Circus Maximus. Within ten to twenty minutes on foot you can be at virtually every important monument in Rome.
You will find yourself in a small village within ancient Rome that offers several local restaurants. There is no supermarket, but a local family-run market that offers, cheese, meat, pasta, wine, fresh bread, and some take-out such as pizza. We didn't have small money when we went to shop at the little, local market and the signora there said she would simply run a tab for us; we could come back and pay her the next day. There is a vegetable and fruit seller too; what else do you need? This area, right across the Tiber from Trastevere, has a wonderful collection of sights that will delight you with their accessibility. Opposite the main entrance is the massive double arch of Janus. Two Romanesque belfries decorate the near horizon and beyond rise the Palatine and Capitoline hills of ancient Rome. The Palatine with its pines is one of the most easily appreciated Roman ruins.
Across the Piazza della Bocca della Verita "The Mouth of Truth" are two small intact Roman temples in a small park. A lovely fountain with two tritons lends beauty to the busy piazza. Santa Maria in Cosmedin, also on the Piazza, hosts the Bocca della Verita, the Mouth of Truth, a large round face with open mouth that dates from the 2nd century BC. Legend is that if you tell a lie with your hand in the mouth, the stone jaws will bite it off. Tourists queue for a photo op but forget to enjoy the charming church with a seeming infinite variety of mosaic floor patterns.
We love the history of this area and must share a little so you understand how special the location is. Romulus and Remus, the foundling twins who founded Rome, were said to have been raised by a wolf in this formerly swampy area near the Tiber river. They founded their empire on the Palatine hill that stands behind the Janus.
Next to the Palatine is the Capitoline Hill with the most beautiful piazza in Rome, designed by Michelangelo. Two small and very accessible museums flank the piazza. The drop behind the Capitoline is called the Rock of Tarpeia, name after a Roman woman who betrayed her side and let her lover, the king of the Sabines, into the city. She was executed by being thrown from this height. This locale was used for centuries for executions. Santa Maria della Conciliazione is a church built below the drop to console the condemned.
San Giorgio in Velabro is one of the oldest churches in Rome and it stands right behind the apartment. The nave is supported by columns taken from ancient Roman buildings. This church is very popular for weddings, so be sure to stick around on weekends and enjoy the excitement of the wedding parties.
A number of bus lines service the Piazza, so you can hop a bus to speed your way to and from. There are two Metro stops within about a seven minute walk, offering another alternative to making your way about the Eternal City.
A 17th century palazzo has been converted to sunny and peaceful apartments. They offer comfortable beds and furniture. Linens are first class, hotel quality. There is a lot of closet, bureau and bathroom storage space, so you can truly settle in here.
The kitchenettes and dining tables allow you to have a quiet meal "at home," or to eat your breakfast on your personal schedule, perhaps al fresco on the common terrace or your own small balcony. A buffet breakfast served downstairs off the lobby is included in the rent. The views from most of the apartments are lovely, either of the Palatine Hill or of the Piazza della Bocca della Verita.
There are three sizes of apartments that each have the same kitchenette and bathroom facilities: studio, a one bedroom and a larger one bedroom with a sofa bed. On each floor there is a studio/1 bedroom combination that can be connected.

| Highly Recommended | May 2011 |
The Janus is highly recommended for travelers who enjoy independence and setting their own pace. It’s located in a quiet, terraced section of Rome away from the noise and congestion of more heavily trafficked areas of the city. The hotel is between the Capitoline and Palatine hills, just a few steps from the Tiber and the lovely Isola Tiberina, and immediately adjacent to the Arch of Janus, which the hotel overlooks. Within walking distance is the old Jewish Ghetto and Piazza Venezia, from where any number of buses can take you throughout the old city. If you enjoy walking, you can reach almost anywhere in central Rome on foot within twenty minutes. The hotel, a former convent, has recently been renovated. Rooms are bright and spacious, with kitchenettes that include a dishwasher and refrigerator. Rooms at the rear of the building have balconies overlooking the lovely garden of the building next door and with a view of the Palatine. All rooms have central air conditioning/heating. There’s a small cafe on the ground floor that provides a continental breakfast. One big plus for staying at the Janus is the 24-hour desk staff, all English-speaking and very anxious to please. They are very efficient at arranging taxis, providing directions to major sites, and suggesting nearby restaurants and shops. Four stars for the Janus! |

| Great location, plenty of room, well-kept, great staff. | Dec 2007 |
Thank you so much for your expertise and wonderful choice of apts for us. The apt was PERFECT. Great location, plenty of room, well-kept, great staff. We would absolutely stay there again. A couple of times Steve and I went off for early morning sightseeing while the others slept late, then would meet up for a family venture. Nice that we could walk to so many things. In fact we walked for hours and hours every day. New Year's Eve was a lot of fun - the crowed seems to do there own thing with fireworks at the piazza at Compidoglio (in fact we had fireworks going on all around us!). Anyway, all lots of fun. A perfect family vacation. I look forward to using your services in the future. |

| The Janus apartments were lovely! | Jan 2007 |
And an almost perfect place for someone on crutches to relax and recuperate in while the family did the things I really couldn't easily do such as the Roman Forum and the Coliseum. But the Arch of Janus was right outside my bedroom window and once you've seen one ancient arch you've seen them all!!!! The staff was wonderful, especially Maria and even some of the regular apartment owners were solicitous and helpful. Nearby Events or Sights: The Roman Forum and Coliseum were practically around the corner. The boys walked comfortably to the Vatican and to the Victor Emanuel Monument, and the Piazza de la Bocca has its own interests--so the area is fine. The only real negative was the lack of cafes, pasticcerias and markets although we did find a few. But the quiet and respite more than made up for this! Getting around: We were able to see the Vatican museums and the Museo Borghese which conveniently provided wheelchairs. However, as you can well imagine most of Roma is pretty tough on a disabled person. I literally had to crutch the entire length of St. Peters Square to get into the basilica. Tips: We found Rick Steve's Rome guide book invaluable companion for going through museums and churches, etc. and the Michelin Green Guide: Rome helpful for food as well as the Lonely Planet Rome City guide. Restaurants: We ate dinner at La Carbonara in the Campo di Fiori--not overwhelming experience. I would prefer spending the time at either the Piazza de la Rotunda or Piazza Navona for a meal. We also ate at El Pasayarello in Trestevere and were not overwhelmed by that either. We tremendously enjoyed our dinner at Vecchio Locanda near the Pantheon--since we had to sit upstairs and not in the wine cellar we would able to witness a great fight between the 60+year old cook and the waiter. The food was good, but the desserts you should pass on. Our last meal was at Trattoria Da Bucatino in the Testaccio area and loved everything about it, ambience, quality of the food and value and the desserts were wonderful--especially the millie flueres. I cannot wait to go back! |
