The Janus residence is in a really special location in Rome. Wonderful ancient and medieval monuments are right outside your door, while you find yourself in a peaceful village within the walls of Rome. It is a five minute walk to Trastevere, Piazza Venezia, the Capitoline Hill, the Palantine Hill, the Theater of Marcellus, and the Circus Maximus. Within ten to twenty minutes on foot you can be at virtually every important monument in Rome.

You will find yourself in a small village within ancient Rome that offers several local restaurants. There is no supermarket, but a local family-run market that offers, cheese, meat, pasta, wine, fresh bread, and some take-out such as pizza. We didn't have small money when we went to shop at the little, local market and the signora there said she would simply run a tab for us; we could come back and pay her the next day. There is a vegetable and fruit seller too; what else do you need? This area, right across the Tiber from Trastevere, has a wonderful collection of sights that will delight you with their accessibility. Opposite the main entrance is the massive double arch of Janus. Two Romanesque belfries decorate the near horizon and beyond rise the Palatine and Capitoline hills of ancient Rome. The Palatine with its pines is one of the most easily appreciated Roman ruins.

Across the Piazza della Bocca della Verita "The Mouth of Truth" are two small intact Roman temples in a small park. A lovely fountain with two tritons lends beauty to the busy piazza. Santa Maria in Cosmedin, also on the Piazza, hosts the Bocca della Verita, the Mouth of Truth, a large round face with open mouth that dates from the 2nd century BC. Legend is that if you tell a lie with your hand in the mouth, the stone jaws will bite it off. Tourists queue for a photo op but forget to enjoy the charming church with a seeming infinite variety of mosaic floor patterns.

We love the history of this area and must share a little so you understand how special the location is. Romulus and Remus, the foundling twins who founded Rome, were said to have been raised by a wolf in this formerly swampy area near the Tiber river. They founded their empire on the Palatine hill that stands behind the Janus.

Next to the Palatine is the Capitoline Hill with the most beautiful piazza in Rome, designed by Michelangelo. Two small and very accessible museums flank the piazza. The drop behind the Capitoline is called the Rock of Tarpeia, name after a Roman woman who betrayed her side and let her lover, the king of the Sabines, into the city. She was executed by being thrown from this height. This locale was used for centuries for executions. Santa Maria della Conciliazione is a church built below the drop to console the condemned.

San Giorgio in Velabro is one of the oldest churches in Rome and it stands right behind the apartment. The nave is supported by columns taken from ancient Roman buildings. This church is very popular for weddings, so be sure to stick around on weekends and enjoy the excitement of the wedding parties.

A number of bus lines service the Piazza, so you can hop a bus to speed your way to and from. There are two Metro stops within about a seven minute walk, offering another alternative to making your way about the Eternal City.

A 17th century palazzo has been converted to sunny and peaceful apartments. They offer comfortable beds and furniture. Linens are first class, hotel quality. There is a lot of closet, bureau and bathroom storage space, so you can truly settle in here.

The kitchenettes and dining tables allow you to have a quiet meal "at home," or to eat your breakfast on your personal schedule, perhaps al fresco on the common terrace or your own small balcony. A buffet breakfast served downstairs off the lobby is included in the rent. The views from most of the apartments are lovely, either of the Palatine Hill or of the Piazza della Bocca della Verita.

There are three sizes of apartments that each have the same kitchenette and bathroom facilities: studio, a one bedroom and a larger one bedroom with a sofa bed. On each floor there is a studio/1 bedroom combination that can be connected.

3 night minimum. Price includes continental breakfast, daily cleaning except for kitchen, final cleaning, taxes, utilities, daily towel change and a mid-stay bedding change for weekly stays.
