| Florence, Toscanella |
"The small piazza just in front of the building quickly became our second living room." |
| Large Florence Vacation Rental Apartment |

The spaciousness of Toscanella, fantastic central location, charming neighborhood, comfortable living room, excellent kitchen, quiet bedrooms, WiFi Internet access are top features of this apartment.
The 15th century buildings on this block were once the royal bakery for the Medici family. Imagine entire generations of bakers in residence, keeping the ovens stoked day and night, year-round to serve up fresh bread for the famous Medici family that lived a block away at the Pitti Palace. On those hot August days it must have been a real 'Dante's Inferno'! The name Toscanella comes from a gentleman named Toscanelli Dal Pozzo whose home was at the end of the street closest to the Pitti Palace. The street is very narrow, just wide enough for one car to pass. This is located within Florence's pedestrian thoroughfare, so is accessible to residents, taxi and delivery vehicles, but is closed to through traffic. Guests can obtain a special permit for temporary car access during business hours to the street.
Around the corner, along Via Guicciardini which runs in front of the Pitti Palace, are shops, restaurants, wine bars, and cafes. The streets in this area are lined with artisan shops where famous Florentine crafts such as furniture making, gilding, faux painting, picture framing, and bespoke shoe making, are still passed from generation to generation. Many of these crafts had begun to die out a few years ago, as the younger generation spurned these old crafts, but in recent years there has been a resurgance of interest in carrying on the tradition. Peer into artisan workrooms and notice that it isn't just ancient "Gepetto" (the carpenter of Pinocchio fame) tinkering away, but you are likely see several young people working alongside as well, and this warms our heart. Charming Piazza Santo Spirito is around the corner. In the mornings it features a small open-air produce and housewares market, where locals come to get fresh fruits and vegetables for today's lunch and dinner, or even inexpensive housewares. At noon the restaurants lining the piazza open up and provide a welcome spot to enjoy meals al fresco. There are several language schools on this piazza, so the Toscanella apartment is convenient if you want to spend time in Florence taking an intensive Italian language course. Several of our favorite restaurants are only a block away from the apartment. One of the most famous restaurants in Florence frequented by locals, tourists and celebrities alike, Trattoria 4 Leone (4 Lions), is one block away. There are two handy alimentari (mini markets) within one block where you can buy diary products, wine, cheese, cereal and deli items.
We're partial to Florence's Oltrarno (meaning Over the Arno) area. It's quieter then the downtown area, abounds with great restaurants, and is just over Ponte Vecchio bridge to the 'Magic Kingdom' of downtown Florence. The location of Toscanella is ideal for exploring all of Florence and the tiny street has a quaint, neighborhood feel to it. You'll start to recognize locals as they come and go, kids play soccer in the street and nearby piazza, and local merchants will recognize and greet you as you frequent their establishments. Yet it's only a few minutes walk to the center of town. No exaggeration - the Ponte Vecchio is a few blocks away, as is the Uffizi Gallery! The Pitti Palace is right around the corner. The majestic Boboli Gardens are just a few blocks away ard are a lovely spot for strolling and picnicing.
The building entrance is not impressive and upon entering from the street the stairwell is a bit of a let down as the walls are rather scuffed from a neighbor who carries his bicycle up and down the stairwell. You might have to fumble to find the stairwell light, which is on a timer as it typical Italian custom. Walk up one flight of stairs to reach the apartment front door. There is no elevator. Fortunately, once inside, you'll find a clean and bright apartment.
The Toscanella is a spacious, comfortable apartment located in the Oltrarno area of Florence, only a few minutes walk from all the major sites. The apartment features quiet bedrooms that overlook an inner courtyard and a very nice open-plan kitchen. The narrow street is only one car wide, meaning little through traffic and relaxed strolling along the streets. It is located on the second floor with kitchen and dining room windows overlooking the street. It i
The Toscanella living room has a very comfortable sofa and two matching upholstered armchairs. The furnishings are comfortable, basic and functional but not fancy. The living room windows overlook the quiet inner courtyard of the building, which features a little fountain and trees. Beamed ceilings, characteristic of Tuscan architecture, add a charming touch. This is a perfect area for gathering, chatting about the day ahead and regrouping at night for cocktails or just hanging out reading or watching movies on the DVD pla
To the left of the living room is an open-plan dining room and spacious kitchen. The living room, dining room and kitchen have terracotta tile floors. The beautiful burnished chestnut wood antique dining room table seats up to 8 people, and is a delightful spot to gather and enjoy leisurely meals. Just around the corner from the apartment you can select fresh produce at Piazza Santo Spirito's open-air market.
The large kitchen with pale beechwood cabinets is a chef's delight, with the latest appliances and conveniences. And because it opens onto the dining room you won't feel cut-off from rest of your group while preparing meals. The stainless steel work surface that spans the length from one wall to the other contains the stove and sink. The opposite counter is creamy beige terrazzo. Above the terrazzo counter is a beechwood counter for casual meals for two, a quick breakfast or the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine while meal preparation is underway. A skylight brings in additional light to the room. There is a 5-burner professional quality gas stove, a full refrigerator with separate freezer section, dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, toaster, electric oven, American-style coffee maker, several sizes of Italian stovetop espresso makers, electric juicer, immersion blender, top quality pots and pans. In fact, a well-known local chef has used the apartment on occasion to conduct cooking classes - a real testament to the quality of Toscanella's kitchen.
The master bedroom, second bedroom and bathrooms are down the hallway beyond the living room. The hallway, master bathroom, master bedroom and second bedroom have glossy mahogany stained hardwood floors, easy on the feet and warm in the wintertime. The master bedroom is at the end of the long hallway and has a window overlooking the internal courtyard. It has a king size bed, top quality firm mattress, and a large closet.
The versatile second bedroom features a bunkbed and trundle combination that can be made up as two or three twin beds, or a dual-king plus a twin. There is a small window and a closet. The upper bunk has an ingenious, space-spacing collapsable desktop that can be lowered to make a desk surface, or raised up and folded out-of-the way when making up two of the twin beds as a dual king bed.
The master bathroom is large and elegant, with a long terrazzo countertop, heated towel racks, a fully enclosed shower, bidet, toilet and halogen lights. A hairdryer is provided. The small second bathroom has a toilet and small sink. The shower has a curtain surround. This bathroom is functional, with clean white tile throughout, but is more like a ship-style W.C., so best serves guests who don't mind a bathroom that is functional yet small, as space is limited.
The third bedroom is set apart from the other bedrooms, and is just off the front entry area, before the living room. It has a single twin bed, a dresser and a window overlooking the inner courtyard. It's simple but perfect for an extra guest, nanny or teenager who wants privacy.

• Terrific, central, location
• Many good restaurants, grocery stores nearby
• Roominess is ideal for families
• Furnishings are plain
• Second bathroom is tiny
• Plenty of space for 2 couples but bedroom and bathroom layout makes it inequitable for 1 couple
• Building foyer and stairwell are unattractive
| Excellence on the other side of the Arno | Dec 2009 |
We loved our accommodation on the Altrarno, nestled in the tiny streets near the Pitti Palace and right next to a wonderful little piazza with a great bar across the road for breakfast and prosecco later in the day. Being just slightly away from the hustle and bustle of the Uffizi, Accademia and Duomo means you can rediscover what Florence is really about. The apartment itself is a delight to come back to - clean, spacious, all modern conveniences (including a brand new washing machine) and very comfortable for the four people in our party. |

We loved the location of Toscanella. It had a grocery store within a few blocks and the Gastronomia around the corner on San Jacopo. We loved the feeling of really living in Florence since the area was very residential. All of the sites were within easy walking distance but it was wonderfully quiet place to come back to. It was very spacious and mostly well appointed. The kitchen and bathroon were lovely and well equipted but the bedroom and living room were worn. We especially like the desk with intenet access. We really appreciated being able to store our luggage because we had a late departure. The washing machine was great and the lack of a dryer was not even an issue. We loved the whole experience and would definately rent from you again! |

| Perfectly quiet | Aug 2009 |
Toscanella was the perfect apartment for 4 business women at a conference. We had such easy access to all the sites, great restaurants, and our conference. In addition, the apartment was remarkably quiet in the evenings and mornings. The kitchen was so well equipped and the market was convienient. The second bathroom was tiny but functional. We enjoyed the stay. |

| The apartment is well put together with families in mind, very clean and tidy | Dec 2008 |
Toscanella in Florence is just a stone's throw to the Ponte Vecchio in spite of this the apartment and tiny street are very quiet. The apartment is well put together with families in mind, very clean and tidy, wonderful kitchen, living room and a large dinning table. When we go back to Florence again we would choose to stay at the Toscanella apartment. One of our children adored the little bedroom nearest to the front door of the apartment, although you do hear noise from people walking by in the outside hallway (not a problem). Washing machine in the kitchen was in good working order as were most things in the apartment, would have been nice to have a dryer though. The area is also perfect walking distance to all things. Wonderful little deli within 10 feet of your front door, wonderful Swiss couple run the deli, can get milk, juice, bread, etc. as well. Also two little wonderful restaurants within 15 feet.... overall an amazing city and apartment...ITALY PERFECT! Looking forward to staying with you again. |

| Market and cafes nearby are great | Jul 2008 |
The apartment is in an ideal location, and the neighborhood is charming. The market downstairs and the cafes nearby are great. The apartment was well equipped- appreciated the ability to cook. The baths were nice and the ability to do some laundry was great. Loved the clothes lines outside the window. Made us feel Italian. The wine is wonderful- the neighbors friendly- the Duomo is unbelievable. All in all a good trip! |

| So easy to get away from the big crowds | Aug 2007 |
Thanks so much for the welcome back. The Tonscanella apartment was suberb for our needs and the biggest plus was the location for us. It was so easy to get away from the big crowds and go where we wanted to visit on foot. Your print outs [guest confirmation documents] are very helpful too. |

| Great beds and beautiful linens | Jul 2007 |
With our expectations already exceeded in Rome at the Tiberio apartment, we were thrilled to walk in to the Toscanella and see such a beautifully appointed home. This apartment has everything you could ask for. Three bedrooms with great beds and beautiful linens, two state of the art full bathrooms and a chef's kitchen that fulfills every cook's need and whim. With excellent markets nearby, and some of the finest restaurants just steps away, it was a nightly dilemma for the 7 of us to decide whether to eat in or dine out! The small piazza just in front of the building quickly became our second living room. The small, standing-room-only Caffé degli Artigiani just out the front door was a great place to catch an early morning cappuccino with the locals on their way to work. The Il Magazzino Osteria Tripperia (don't let the name discourage you - there's more on the menu than the local delicacy, and they have an excellent list of Tuscan wines) was a favorite haunt and the owner gave us many great suggestions for restaurants in other neighborhoods. Next door is the acclaimed and popular Trattoria Quattro Leoni. Walk over early in the day to make a reservation for dinner if you want to dine with the hip crowd that frequents this place. We only managed lunch there once, as it's packed every night. Though our goal for staying at the Toscanella was to fully experience - if only for a week - the city as a native Florentine might, it wouldn't have been half as easy without Maurizio and his staff. They provided much needed assistance when my childhood Italian was tested, or we needed help negotiating our way around the city. Though a week was barely enough time to see all the major sites we wanted to show our daughters, we were totally enchanted with our exploration of this side of the river. Across from the Pitti Palace is Pitti Ceramiche, a beautiful shop run by two brothers both fluent in English and one of whom is the artist responsible for much of the original hand-painted ceramic wares gracing the shelves. I've looked all over Tuscany for this stuff, and this is hands-down the best shop I've been in with colors and patterns beyond compare. They even reduce their prices by 20% for non-EU citizens and expertly wrap up anything you choose to take with you. Then Anna, of course, just a few doors down on via Guicciardini with those magnificent leather goods. We walked in during a sale, and couldn't believe our luck! Like Pitti Ceramiche, they'll ship home. Even a touristy place like Toscana Mia, also on via Guicciardini, was a find. They carry Tuscan gourmet specialties like Miele di Girasole, the incredible local sunflower honey that goes so well on buttered toast, and sampler packages of assorted Grappa flavors. Their handmade specialty pastas in beautiful packages also made great gifts. And these places are just around the corner from the apartment! There are also two very good supermarkets further down on via Romana and a car park on via della Fonderia. A word to the wise, though, if you're planning on keeping a rental car here. First, the owners have apparently changed in the last year or two, and the new manager is North African with heavily accented Italian and an unusual command of French. English and Spanish won't work here, neither will credit cards. This is a cash only operation now it seems and the equipment is woefully out-dated - as we painfully discovered when we went to pay. The weekly rate for the in-out parking pass is now 120 euros a week - not 40! And the first two or three cards you're issued may not work. Broken gates, unfathomable operation hours (we think the attendant works from 8 at night until 2 in the morning, but we were never sure) and the difficult language barrier aside, the overall convenience of being able to grab your car at any time for a day trip is still worth it. And we'd have to say that this experience (and navigating the one-ways in and out of Florence!) was the only negative one we had during our stay. If we're fortunate enough to visit again with our families, we'll want to stay at the Toscanella for sure! |

| Tucked away, yet so close to everything. | Oct 2006 |
Our visit to Italy was amazing. Florence was so great. I loved the location of the apartment. Tucked away, yet so close to everything. It was also a great configuration for us. People in Florence were wonderfully friendly. My father-in-law visited some of the local artisans, and took some pictures of their shops. There's a guy at Santo Spirito who was making wonderful carvings of hats and other objects, and my father-in-law was welcomed into his shop. The weather was perfect. It was so nice to have a full week to wander around, with no big plans. Well, I guess I can't give you full credit for everything about the trip that was great, but I did want to say that I appreciate your professionalism, including your great follow-up. I will recommend your company without hesitation, and will look forward to staying in another of your properties in the future. |

| Mr. Miranda and Eliza were wonderful and helpful | May 2006 |
We loved the apartment, Florence, the guide books, the kitchen, the washing machine, the shower, the laundry racks, the neighbors, the neighborhood, and most especially the ever cheerful and vocal Mocking Bird! Mr. Miranda and Eliza were wonderful and helpful, Eliza even went with us and helped find the parking lot. The trip was a great success and mostly due to your wonderful apartment and all the details. |
