The tranquil Boboli Gardens were the private grounds of the Medici family's Pitti Palace, when this powerful family reigned supreme during the Renaissance. The 15th century wall that encloses these gardens, Florence's only central public gardens, runs directly behind the apartment. It is about an 10-minute walk down to Piazzale Porta Romana where there is a public entrance to the Boboli Gardens. To the east is the glorious walk up Viale Niccolo Macchiavelli to the million dollar view of Florence from the Piazzale Michelangelo. No need to go to the gym if you make this walk up the hill each day to the top where you'll enjoy panoramic views of the city, often featured in postcards and picture books.

This beautiful Florence vacation rental apartment will make you think you stepped onto a 1920's movie set when you enter the neighborhood behind the Boboli Gardens known as the "Bobolino", or little Boboli Gardens.

Set among a few small quiet streets are two-story residences that were built in the 1920's. This is a very elegant, quiet neighborhood unknown to most tourists. It's an easy walk to all the major sites but lets you escape to a private peaceful retreat with plenty of greenery and a terrace.

Location

The Medici apartment is located on a picturesque lane off a small quiet street. As you walk down the lane you'll see the 15th century stone walls of the Boboli Gardens directly in front of you. The street is less then one block long and dead-ends at the ancient wall. It's a 15- minute walk to the Pitti Palace or the lively Piazza Santo Spirito which has many excellent restaurants and a daily outdoor produce market. The Ponte Vecchio is a 25 minute walk. This is an ideal location if you want to be outside the crowded historic center and don't mind walking. During daylight hours there is a shortcut through the grounds of the nearby Art Academy which shaves a few minutes off the walk. At night, after dinner out, you might want to take a taxi back to the apartment if your feet are crying for mercy after a long day of sightseeing!

For families with young children there is the playground for toddlers on the art academy grounds, something that you won't find in the historic center.

Exterior

The Medici apartment is in a small building containing only two apartments. The Medici apartment is the lower of the two units but is one up from street level. Enjoy meals on the terrace and scenic views of the Tuscan hills from the living room windows. There is ample on-street metered parking in the neighborhood which is very reasonably priced when compared to the high price to park a car within the downtown area of Florence.

Interior

The living room has a very large window that overlooks the lane. In the spring and summer enjoy seeing the neighbor's mature wisteria vine in bloom. In the distance are views of the gentle hills that surround the outskirts of Florence, dotted with stately villas. The lush vegetation and bucolic setting will make you feel like you're in the countryside even though you're a reasonable walk away to the famous sites like the Duomo, the David and the Ponte Vecchio! The living room has two comfortable small sofas accessorized with sumptuous throw pillows. If you want to just sit and relax at home, there is plenty of reading light from the lamps next to the sofas. In the corner of the living room is a dining table and four chairs. Gaze out the living room window and you'll see the ancient walls of the Boboli Gardens immediately to your right.

The master bedroom and bathroom are at the back of the apartment and each have windows opening onto the back garden and patio. The second bedroom has a large window that overlooks the lane. Both bedrooms have large armoires with ample clothing storage space. A foldaway twin bed in the living room can be provided for 5th person.

The eat-in kitchen has French doors that open onto the terrace. Throughout the floors are handsome original polished terracotta tiles. You'll find this kitchen to be a delight to cook in. On the other hand, you're in Florence and on vacation, so chances are you'll be eating out at the many nearby excellent restaurants most days. However, the wonderful selection of fresh seasonal ingredients might tempt you to cook at home. Just at the edge of the neighborhood in the Piazza Porta Romana are a few daily produce stands that sell fresh fruits and vegetables, so handy if you need a few last-minute items. There's even one of Florence's few remaining tripe vendors at this location, if you care try this Florentine speciality!

The bathroom has a large window opening to the terrace, good lighting, and a fully enclosed shower.

A terrace is a "must have" for some of our guests and the Medici apartment has a lovely outdoor space. It's an ideal place to enjoy summer meals. There is a patio table with umbrella. You can just step right out onto the patio from the kitchen and we bet it's the spot where many of you will have some of your most pleasant Florence memories. This is a country where meals al fresco is a way of life and you'll find yourself getting into the swing of things, even if it's just lingering over a cup of coffee and reading a good book outside on the terrace in the mornings.

A DVD player along with a small selection of movies is provided. There is a selection of guidebooks for you to peruse and enjoy.

Our Review

• Dreamy setting, ideal for visitors who want to experience both city and country living

• Location is best for enthusiastic walkers since it is a 25 minute walk to the center. Bus & taxis are an 8-to-10 minute walk

Guest Book Testimonials
The apartment is very comfortable and fully-equipped. Dec 2011

This was my second trip to Italy and both trips I stayed in a property managed by Lisa Byrne and Italy Perfect. This apartment has it all! The apartment is very comfortable and fully-equipped. We were greeted by Francesca who gave us great tips on places to see and dine and we were even given a loaner cell phone to use throughout our stay. There is wireless internet service in the apartment and movies and books and maps; not one detail is overlooked! We were able to walk to the center of the city with ease from this location even though there were bus stops very conveniently located to the apartment. There is a great wine shop, specialty meats and cheese shops and a fantastic grocery store nearby. There was also a produce stand at the bottom of the hill for fresh produce daily. Try Mamma Gina's for dinner, we really enjoyed it. Also, check out Central Market in the morning for wonderful food and wine!

Great appartment in Florence Dec 2011

My husband and I spent a week at the Medici over Thanksgiving. The apartment was much better than staying in a little hotel room and Francesca was very friendly and helpful. We loved to go to the little supermarket nearby and cook dinner. It was a long walk to the center of Florence or even to the Arno but there are a few buses you can take. We rented a car to drive around Tuscany, highly recommend, and we easily found parking near the apartment. We also took a fantastic wine and cooking class through Accidental Tourist. The Medici was a quiet little getaway, perfect for those who want a more authentic experience.

The apartment was lovely Nov 2011

The apartment was lovely. A little small for 5 women with only 1 bath but the kitchen was very roomy and well equipped.

We were a little paranoid with the limited utility usage advice. The location was out of town a bit and not too close to a bus line, the garden was closed at night so not an option. The surrounding area was beautiful. We found a neighborhood restaurant 5 minute walk uphill we frequented 3 evenings, I left the card in the guest book. Franchesca was very nice and pleasant, helped us call a cab to the airport. Having an apt. is really the way to go! Thank you Lisa!

My boyfriend was so impressed, I received a marriage proposal so, the Medici will always have a special place in my heart. Oct 2011

The apartment was awesome. I LOVED the location. Florence is great but it was so nice to come back to the apartment on the small, quiet, dead end street. It was so very quiet and that was a welcome relief after sightseeing and the hustle and bustle of the city. The super markets that were close by were so convenient. The nearby taxi stand...great when I did not feel like walking. Oh, the shortcut to the main street, was time saving and not to mention nice on my tired aching feet. The apartment was so clean and well decorated, I felt like a local. I have been to Florence five times before and stayed in hotels. There is no comparison. Talk about more bang for your buck. The apartment is equipped with everything one needs for an enjoyable and safe vacation. You guys thought of everything. My boyfriend was so impressed, I received a marriage proposal so, the Medici will always have a special place in my heart.

Quiet Respite close to downtown Florence Sep 2011

The best thing about the Medici apartment was the location. It was quiet and secluded, but still close enough for walking - just the thing we needed to get away from the crowds in the downtown area. We loved having our own patio. It felt like home. The local tree lined streets and parks were a welcome and rare find in the densely populated inner city.

Our greeter, Francesca was helpful and pleasant, particulary in assisting us take delivery of our lugggage that Luftansa managed to lose.

Italy Perfect provided us with lots of good information prior to our trip. Conveniences like grocery stores and restaurants were relatively close nearby and the area had the feel of a true Italian neighborhood. The restaurants in the Piazza Santo Spirito were our favourites.

The Medici apartment met our needs perfectly and we would recommend it to any of our friends

We truly left our hearts there and would return in a minute. Jul 2011

We are almost hesitant to give our review of our nine week stay at the Medici apartment in Florence, because we, selfishly, would love to keep it all to ourselves! The location is perfect for its amazing views of the 'old wall', the hills, the lovely neighborhood homes, the great walks thru the grounds of the Art Institute and the easy access by walking or riding the bus from the Porta Romana into the heart of Florence. We truly left our hearts there and would return in a minute. Outdoor markets, stores, restaurants, meat and poultry markets, as well as daily fresh bread bakeries abound. Does it sound like we'd recommend it to a friend? We already have... thanks for making 'magic' happen in Italy.. it really was perfect.

Living in Florence Jun 2011

The Medici apartment is a relatively spacious and well-equipped apartment located in a hilly, leafy residential neighborhood of Florence.

Since we were traveling with our two young boys (10 and 8 years old), we wanted a vacation home with a place to play, tucked away from the bustle of central Florence, and the Medici provided that.

It takes some planning if you wish to cook at home. First, you'll need to acquire all ingredients (including spices). Shops aren't located around the corner or down the street, but a good 15-minute walk with a return trip straight up hill. We also needed to adjust to the vagaries of Italian shop hours. That said, we made some pretty tasty meals. For eating out I'd recommend Antica Porta on via Senese. Also, the Gelateria on the Porta Romana piazza was very good (and a good deal).

The 36 or 37 bus will take you just about anywhere you want to go. Piazzale Michelangelo is worth the view (#12 bus) -- and a nice walk back down the hill to the apartment. Learn when the short cut through the Art Institute is open and closed (it will save a lot of time).

Francesca, our host, and Italy Perfect took care of everything we asked for. Should we visit Italy again, I wouldn't hesitate to call on them.

Excellent apartment-perfect location to walk and see all of Florence Dec 2010

An excellent apartment in a perfect location to walk and see all of Florence. The description was very accurate and we were pleasantly met upon arrival. The apartment is within walking distance of all the “big sites” in downtown Florence. Never once, did we feel the need to take a taxi or bus to get downtown as it is only 20-25 minutes by foot to the center of town. We drove our vehicle and it was easy to find parking and then provided easy access (within 2 hours) to Siena and "The Chianti Road". The interior of the apartment is immaculately and professionally maintained; possesses a very comfortable and pleasant/relaxing atmosphere inside with the furniture/decor. As a result, we felt very comfortable inside unlike other apartments we've rented. We wouldn't hesitate to stay at this apartment again if we return to Florence someday. Highly recommended!

The view from the living room was very nice Nov 2010

The unit was satisfactory overall. The view from the living room was very nice as was the view of the wall in the patio. The only drawback was that it was a distance from many of the sites I wanted to see which meant long walks, taxis or buses. The kitchen could use a few more things like a measuring cup, small frying pan and additional glassware. The neighborhood seemed very safe and had a charm all its own. The service was very good and Francesca [the greeter] was terrific.

Medici Apartment Florence Nov 2010

We stayed at the Medici in the Oltrano district for 2 weeks. The Oltrano is a wonderful area to explore away from the frenzy of that which people call Florence! The one drawback was that the apartment was quite a walk to the nearest bus stop, through a park which had gates that closed in the evening. Having said that the Porta Romana was a great transportation hub and we bought a 20 euro bus pass which was perfect. Don't miss the chance to take the bus to Fiesole and see the Etruscan ruins and a breathtaking view of Florence! The apartment salon is filled with light in the evening and a well equipped kitchen.

Experience authentic Florence Aug 2010

Florence was a wonderful city to visit. The apartment is in a great location, and we felt that we experienced a part of Florence beyond the tourist areas--yet we were still close to all the highlights. The greeter, Francesca, was very helpful. Prepare for mosquitoes in august! We hope to explore Italy again and visit Florence in the future!

Peaceful, charming apartment Jul 2010

We loved this location in Florence. Everything was within walking distance and we looked forward to walking through the park to the calm and quiet of the neighbourhood after a busy day in the city. The apartment is tastefully furnished and well equipped. Italy Perfect made sure the experience was positive - very organized. Having a personal greeter (part of the service) added to the experience. We were able to ask questions about directions, shopping and restaurants upon arrival (in English) and felt we always had someone to call. We have already recommended this accommodation to friends who plan to travel to Florence next year. We would definitely return to the Medici apartment.

The apartment was perfect, very clean, so nicely decorated and a wonderful patio. Jun 2010

The information you sent me via email was filled with everything we could possibly need to know. Not just about the apartment but about Florence. Your tips on places to see, how to get there, suggestions on where to eat were perfect. I used this information to plan our four days in Florence. When we arrived I felt as if I knew exactly where to go, how to get there and all the ins and outs needed.

The apartment was perfect, very clean, so nicely decorated and a wonderful patio. Our son cooked our dinner there the first two nights, getting our food and wine at places that you recommended in your materials. One evening we strolled to the deli not very far from our apartment and came back with a wonderful dinner and a great bottle of wine. Thanks so much for the tip about the shortcut to the piazza. The last night there we went to a restaurant you listed in your information, Terrazza del Principe and had the most beautiful view as we indulged in a magnificent dinner.

Everything from the phone call to greeter to the returning of the key to Francesca was absolutely perfect. Hence the name "Italy Perfect". You do not miss a step, you had everything totally covered for us as guest in your apartment. We loved being outside of the walls of Florence. It could not have been any quieter at night. It was so exciting to get up in the morning, open the shutters and feel Italy. After a day in the busy city of Florence it was so nice to go home to a comfortable bed, and the great patio.

We chose to drive in from Milan. The parking was just as you explained and we had no problem finding a spot near the apartment. We left the car there for the four days, paying via the meter and had no problem at all. A couple of times we took the taxi and that worked out very well.

Thank you Lisa for the work you have put in to make our visit pleasant. Going to a country where you do not speak the language, nor are you versed in their ways, having the information that you have complied for us was "Italy Perfect".

Lovely, comfortable apartment Jun 2010

The apartment was in a real neighborhood, off-the-beaten track, and quiet. An easy walk to the bus. The apartment was comfortable and lovely in every way. Italy Perfect was terrific to work with. Our experience was totally positive.

Always a delight to come "home" to a cool, quiet place in the afternoon Jun 2010

Everything was so lovely. Just as we had hoped after looking at your website.  Francesca was so kind and very thorough ... We felt well equipped to do laundry, cook etc.  The apartment was clean and tidy!! We rented bikes for the week we were there and it was ALWAYS a delight to come "home" to a cool, quiet place in the mid/late afternoon.  We felt rejuvenated after spending a week there! Many many thanks.

Lovely neighbors, lovely neighborhood Jun 2010

We had a very nice stay in the Medici Apt. After having been in Firenze many many times, I can honestly say that the neighborhhod was the lovliest of all. Most afternoons when we returned home, beautiful flute music could be heard from above and a lovely cello down the street. We enjoyed the wonderful garden out back and enjoyed catching some sun in the front at the end of the day. Chris loved playing his mandolin out back and struck up a conversation with the next door neighbor on several occasions. The accomodations were very good and comfortable. The bathroom was easy to use and the kitchen too. Having a washer/dryer was a huge help to us! I will say that if you are a person that does not like to walk or use a bus, this apartment is not for you. It is about a 25 minute walk from the center of town. Lisa was very clear with us before we went that there would be a lot of walking involved so we were prepared. Overall, the apt was a nice place to come home to at night and it is VERY quiet which is not always so easy to find in the city. Thanks again Lisa!

The Bobolino neighborhood was exceptional as was everything else in the surrounding area. Mar 2010

I just wanted to write and let you know how much we loved the Medici apartment.  Our time in Italy would have been that much less wonderful had we not found Italy Perfect and that lovely place to stay.  The Bobolino neighborhood was exceptional as was everything else in the surrounding area.
In the future we will consider your services for when we inevitably return to Italy and will definitely recommend you and your colleagues to our friends and loved ones who may plan to do the same.  Thanks again & ciao!
